European Union’s law provides unique, in global scale, support against unfair business practices. #monopolies #EU #spotify
That’s why Spotify has filed a complaint with the European Commission accusing Apple of violating antitrust laws. Its CEO wrote “Apple operates a platform that, for over a billion people around the world, is the gateway to the internet. Apple is both the owner of the iOS platform and the App Store—and a competitor to services like Spotify. In theory, this is fine. But in Apple’s case, they continue to give themselves an unfair advantage at every turn.” It must be underlined that Apple charges 30% app store commission, which could be perceived as unfair. And access to Apple environment does not only limit to AppStore, but also other Apple services such as Siri, HomePod, and Apple Watch.
If European Commision would initiate antitrust trial it would probably mark Apple as 100% monopoly in Appstore (Android is more democratic in this case). This would change their business and makes more easier access to other producers for Apple products users.
What is important here, is the fact that Spotify decided to chase the Apple in Europe, but not in USA, where it has bigger market. Considering this fact, someone could ask whether USA is a market for “fair” business…, and whether it is not favoring monopolies to much that it should ….
